Separating Road and Rail Lines

Timeframe:Ongoing

Cost:$440 million

What's happening

As part of the $140 million Springvale Road Rail Separation project, Nunawading's new railway station will feature a bubble skylight roof design. This design will use the same materials adopted for Beijing's Water Cube Aquatic Centre. View the artist's impressions of the design in the Springvale Road Rail Separation Project website gallery.

Project description

The Victorian Government will implement program to separate road from rail at key intersections, starting with Springvale Road in Nunawading.

The rail line through this area will be lowered and a new road crossing will be built over it to allow the smooth flow of traffic and trains. A new station will also be built as part of the project to replace existing Nunawading station. The Commonwealth Government has pledged funding towards this project.

This will be the first of several level crossing grade separations. The State will seek Commonwealth funding to extend the program.

Project benefits
  • The Springvale Road, Nunawading grade separation will improve safety and reduce congestion on one of Melbourne's busiest roads.
  • A brand new station will be built, replacing the existing Nunawading Station, to improve the journey for more than 3,000 rail commuters who use this station every day.
  • More than 50,000 motorists who pass through this level crossing every day will benefit from improved traffic flow, resulting in travel time savings.
