Park and ride facilities

The Government has allocated $5 million from its Moving Forward Strategy for provincial Victoria for the construction of park and ride (Parkway) facilities at key locations on the rail corridors into Melbourne.

Echuca corridor station upgrades

Echuca, Rochester and Elmore stations were upgraded with a total of $1.2 million in works to improve passenger comfort and convenience. The station upgrades coincided with the return of daily rail services to Echuca in 2007.

The following works were completed in early 2007:

Echuca
  • Platform resurfacing
  • New platform fencing and seating
  • Install remote public address systems
  • Exterior painting
  • Booking office works
  • Install electronic passenger information displays
  • Lighting upgrade
Elmore
  • Platform resurfacing
  • New platform fencing and seating
  • Install remote public address systems
  • Repair paint work
  • Lighting upgrade
Rochester
  • Platform resurfacing
  • New platform fencing and seating
  • Install remote public address system
  • Lighting upgrade

Lara Railway Station

The $700,000 upgrade of Lara Station, near Geelong, to provide both structural and aesthetic improvements was completed in 2008.

The improvements included:
  • a new coach/train interchange
  • a larger passenger waiting room
  • a new customer kiosk
  • a new staffroom / meals area
  • new customer and staff toilets including facilities for people with a disability
  • structural improvements to the building
  • painting and landscaping improvements.
The upgrade complements the Lara Parkway (park and ride) facility which was completed in 2007.

Wallan Railway Station

The $2 million makeover of Wallan Station, on the Seymour rail line, including the construction of a park and ride (Parkway) facility was completed in 2008.

Works included:
  • upgraded and expanded car parking to accommodate up to 240 vehicles
  • covered walkways, improved lighting and secure parking that includes CCTV coverage
  • directional signage on the Hume Freeway alerting motorists of Wallan Parkway
  • new bus bay and shelter to support the introduction of a new Wallan bus service connecting to Wallan Station
  • new passenger waiting areas on both platforms
  • air-conditioned waiting room complete with refreshment vending machines on the Melbourne-bound side.

Ballarat's Second Railway Station

Services to Ballarat's second railway station, Wendouree Station, started on Sunday, 14 June 2009.

The new station is located about 100 metres west of the Gillies Street level crossing and is serving more than 27,000 people living in the Wendouree, Alfredton and Lake Wendouree areas as well as the nearby townships of Learmonth and Miners Rest.

Swan Hill Railway Station

An $800,000 renovation of Swan Hill Station was completed in November 2007. The works involved a major overhaul of the existing station to improve passenger and staff facilities. The works included:
  • a new coach/train interchange
  • a larger passenger waiting room
  • a new cafe
  • a new staffroom/meals area
  • new toilets for passengers and staff including facilities for people with a disability
  • structural building works, painting and landscaping.

Marshall Railway Station

Marshall Railway Station was completed in September 2005.

The Government allocated $5 million in the 2003–04 State Budget to construct a new railway station to help boost public transport services for Geelong's southern suburbs and the nearby Surf Coast communities.

In December 2003, the Marshalltown Road site for the new station was announced and work started on the station in August 2004. Stage 1 of Marshall Railway Station was opened on 26 April 2005 when Melbourne/Warrnambool trains started stopping at the station. Stage 2 of the station was opened on 26 September 2005 when 58 train services a week began operating to and from the station. Following the introduction of a new V/Line timetable in September 2006, 155 services now operate between Marshall and Melbourne each week.

Marshall Railway Station includes:
  • a 160-metre platform with a small station building including passenger shelter and a ticket sales area
  • toilets
  • full compliance with the Federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992
  • an off-street bus interchange
  • parking for 100 cars (with the potential to expand as required)
  • car and taxi drop-off/pick-up areas
  • attractive landscaping in keeping with the local environment
  • lighting for passenger safety and security
  • a run-around track so that different types of trains can use the station.

Sherwood Park Railway Station

Trains services to and from Sherwood Park - a new $1.15 million railway station at Deakin University's Warrnambool campus - started from 19 February 2006 to provide students and staff with easy access to train services to and from Melbourne. The new station is also available for residents of nearby Gillin Park

From March 2007, the number of services running to and from the station was increased from two to 28 a week.

The station boasts passenger shelter, Disability Discrimination Act compliant ramps and pathways, and tactile tiles along the length of the platform. The station has also been located approximately 200 metres from the university.

Construction of the station was jointly funded by the State Government and Deakin University.

The name of the station was chosen following a public competition. Sherwood Park refers to the name of the former grazing property on which the Deakin University campus was built.

New Wodonga Railway Station

The State Government plans to build a new railway station at West Wodonga once the railway line is removed from central Wodonga as part of the Rail Bypass project.

Heritage works

Ballarat Railway StationVicTrack completed a $2.6 million restoration of the Ballarat Railway Station Train Hall in March 2006. Works included restoration of the train hall roof exterior, east and west arches and platform canopies, and waterproofing of the train hall. The station was first opened in 1862 and was Victoria’s busiest non-metropolitan train station during the gold rush.
Maryborough Railway StationA $1.9 million restoration of historic Maryborough Station involved vital repairs to the towers, clock, facade, portico, roof and guttering.

The upgrade was completed in 2008.

The station was built in 1890 and is a local tourist attraction.
St Arnaud Railway StationA careful restoration of St Arnaud Railway Station was completed in April 2006. The $140,000 project involved replacing corrugated roofing, guttering and spouting on all the station buildings. The station was built in 1878.
