Taxi Rank Safety Program
Applications are now open for the Taxi Rank Safety Program (TRSP), an initiative that provides grants to Victorian councils to improve the safety, quality and amenity of taxi ranks in areas of high usage.
The TRSP will provide grant-based funding to councils to install or upgrade infrastructure at taxi ranks. Funding allocated to this program is $4 million over four years beginning in the 2009-10 financial year.
Applications close at 5.00 pm on Friday, 15 January 2010.

Type of infrastructure funded
Infrastructure that may be funded by this program includes but is not limited to:
- closed circuit television
- improved lighting
- pedestrian barriers
- weather shelters
- signage
- seats
- modifications to curbing or road treatments
Councils will be required to fund security personnel at taxi ranks. Applicants may wish to fund this and other ongoing costs separately as a demonstrated commitment to their project.
Eligibility
Only councils in Victoria are eligible to apply for funding. Community groups, businesses and taxi companies wishing to have input into the program are advised to contact their local council.
How to apply
Applications must demonstrate that the proposed TRSP project will:
- increase the safety of taxi passengers and drivers at a taxi rank
- provide taxi passengers and drivers with better amenities at a taxi rank
- have support from the local community, local businesses and taxi company
- be value for money
Councils are reminded that while their application may meet the above criteria, it may be determined that other applications better meet the aims of the program.
Councils wishing to receive an application form can do so by submitting their
expression of interest.
For your application to be considered, it must be received at the VTD by 5pm on 15 January 2010.
Assessment guidelines
Each assessment for grant-based funding will be assessed against specific criteria detailed in the
Program guidelines (PDF, 305 KB, 8 pp.).
Projects will be assessed by the Victorian Taxi Directorate (VTD) Assessment Panel to ensure that funding is given to councils that demonstrate that the requested infrastructure will provide the greatest benefit for both taxi passengers and drivers.
In line with the Government's commitment to increase safety on Victorian streets, priority will be given to infrastructure projects that further enhance Safe Taxi Ranks.
