Taxi totems provide travel information for passengers and alert drivers to awaiting passengers.

Features

The double-sided totem signs feature a solar-powered light that can be activated by a waiting passenger by pressing a button to alert passing taxi drivers. They are compliant with the federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and include:
  • Location name and nearest cross street.
  • A list of taxi services and booking numbers available within the local area, including booking numbers for wheelchair-accessible taxis.
  • An area map showing geographic location with a 'You Are Here' indicator.
  • Details of the Taxi Services Customer Charter, which identifies customers' rights and responsibilities.
  • Connections to train, tram and bus services, where available.
  • Instructions on how to activate the light, including in tactile and braille text to help customers with a visual impairment.
The totems are 2.8 metres high, 37 centimetres wide and 16 centimetres deep and are safely anchored by support cables. They are made of anti-graffiti-coated aluminium. Some of the graphics on the totems are reflective to be more visible at night.

Background

The totems greatly help passengers waiting for taxis at highly-used taxi ranks by providing useful information and a safe means for hailing passing taxis.

They are part of a wider program to improve customer service in Victoria's taxi industry. See Taxi and hire vehicle reform.
