Load Permits for travelling across train and tram lines

A permit system exists for road vehicles wishing to take large loads over train or tram lines throughout Victoria. This page provides details of those permits and the application process.

When is a permit needed?

Owners or operators of vehicles of require special permits for travelling across train and tram lines anywhere in Victoria including non-active lines and tourist railway lines.

Failure to obtain a permit may void vehicle insurance; public liability insurance and may breach VicRoads regulations and conditions.

Note: all permits will have an expiry date. Onus is with the applicant to obtain, renew or amend permits.

Types of permits

Over Dimensional Load Permit
An over dimensional load permit is required for vehicles or loads over the following dimensions:
  • train crossings: three metres wide by 4.9 metres high and 26 metres long
  • tram crossings: three metres wide by 4.3 metres high and 26 metres long.

There are two types of over dimensional load permits:

Trip Movement Permit
  • Cross with caution - allows the applicant to convey the over dimensional load across rail or tram tracks without the need for at Transport Compliance Officer to attend
  • Attendance permits - requires a Transport Compliance Officer to attend to supervise the crossing of the over dimensional load due to the high risk of the movement. (Subject to staff availability, a minimum of 48 hours notice is required.)
Restricted Movement Permit
A restricted movement permit is issued for a period of 12 months and applies to vehicles or loads with the following dimensions:
  • train crossings: not to exceed five metres wide to 4.9 metres high and 26 metres long
  • tram crossings: not to exceed five metres wide to 4.8 metres high and 26 metres long on gazetted Vic Roads Over Dimensional routes

Application process

Step 1: Submit written request
A written application must be submitted to the Department of Transport at:
The application must include the following in full:
  • Contact details including
    • name and address of the company
    • contact person
    • contact phone number
    • email address or fax number
  • Load details including
    • description
    • number of loads
    • height
    • width
    • length
    • and weight
  • Travel details including:
    • proposed route
    • suburb/town of departure and arrival
    • time of departure
    • time of first crossing
    • any known train and/or tram crossings
  • VicRoads permit number (if known)

Step 2: Assessment Risk
Once the application is received, a risk assessment will be undertaken to determine what type of permit is required and whether a Transport Compliance Officer or other transport personnel will be needed to attend.

Step 3: Permit issue
The permit will be issued to you via email or fax.

An invoice will be mailed to your with payment details at the bottom. Payment is required within 30 days.

Costs

All permits include a fee of $18.70. Additional costs will apply if Transport Compliance Officers or other transport personnel are required to attend.
