Environment policy
Through the commitment and involvement of its staff, the Department of Transport will maintain an environmental management system appropriate to the environmental impacts of its office-based activities from its CBD locations.
The department will strive for continual improvement in its environmental performance in the following areas:
- energy use
- water consumption
- paper use
- waste generation
- transportation.
To achieve this, the department will commit to the following actions and practices:
- adopt a pollution prevention approach to Department of Transport office-based activities
- comply with all relevant government policy and environmental legislation
- set objectives and targets so as to continually improve our environmental management and performance
- monitor and review our environmental performance
- promote this environmental policy and the environmental management system to department staff
- communicate the department's environmental performance in its Annual Report
Current initiatives
The Department of Transport is continually working towards improving its environmental performance. Current initiatives include:
- working to incorporate sustainability into our business operations
- identifying opportunities to further reduce waste to landfill, including undertaking an annual waste audit
- highlighting the ecological sustainable design (ESD) features of the new offices at 121 Exhibition Street including blackwater recycling and automated lighting
- continuing to limit the growth of peripheral electronic equipment on floors to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and work towards a 4 star ABGR (Australian Building Greenhouse Rating)
- reducing greenhouse gas emissions by incorporating more 4 cylinder, LPG and hybrid vehicles into the Department of Transport fleet
- an electronic document management system to reduce the reliance on printing of paper.
