Intermodal terminals

An intermodal terminal is as a location for the transfer of freight from one transport mode to another, for example between road and rail.

Developing a network of metropolitan and regional intermodal terminals is a central element of Freight Futures and the Victorian Transport Plan.

They will have a central role to play in easing the burden on the ports and neighbouring areas. They are also essential if rail is to increase its role in the freight transport and distribution system.

Development of new regional intermodal terminals

Many of the intermodal terminal development proponents are seeking State and local government support for related infrastructure (rail sidings, hard stand etc.), planning and land use. The Department of Transport assists planning and development of these terminals.

The Department of Industry, Innovation and Regional Development has $20 million available through its Regional Infrastructure Development Fund specifically for the purpose of developing intermodal freight terminals.

Dooen

The current site at Horsham is limited in area for growth and requires upgraded infrastructure. An alternative greenfield site at Dooen, 11 km north-east of Horsham, is presently being planned which would improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. It also has greater availability of land for growth and better interaction with the grain industry.

The proposal has received $2.25m in funding from the State Government's Regional Infrastructure Development Fund, $6.5m from the Federal Government's AusLink program and $0.5m from the Horsham Rural City Council. The proposal is being project managed by GHD in association with Coffey Rail.

Gippsland

The Gippsland Logistics Precinct is located in the central Gippsland town or Morwell. It consists of 64 hectares of land owned by Latrobe City Council and a rail siding running off the main Gippsland line.

Gippsland is home to significant industries including energy, timber and paper, food and agribusiness. The development of the Gippsland Logistic Precinct aims to provide a rail terminal able to meet the needs of the wider Gippsland region.

A recently completed business case has demonstrated that indicative demand for the site was positive. Latrobe City Council is now promoting the site to potential rail developers/operators. Visit the Council website for a copy of the project plan for the Gippsland Logistics Precinct.

Shepparton and West Warrnambool

Upgrade works will be undertaken at the West Warrnambool and Gippsland intermodal terminals.
